I use black and white 35 mm film and no filters or additional lighting (with the exception of a flash) are used during my image taking.
My black and white photographs are an attempt to evoke emotion, causing the observer to feel a personal connection to the image. I try to capture simple images from everyday surroundings, finding that there is beauty, irony, and uniqueness contained in so much of what we take for granted.
My eye is often drawn to images not only with pattern and contrast but also with a message, either implicit or explicit. I try to capture the story that often only a picture can tell. I enjoy the luck of being in the right place at the right time: when the only train of the day is passing through a small town, when the afternoon light is enfolding an old building, when there is just a flash of a smile on someone’s face before it disappears.
When people see my work, I’d like for them to come away from it with a sense of place and belonging. If my photographs cause someone to “feel” the image emotionally rather than just “see” it visually, then I have been successful in sharing my vision.
